"Chelonian Treasures" 16" x 20" Acrylic on Canvas
October is almost upon us! I can't believe how fast the days are going by and how little I seem to accomplish. Must be the shorter daylight hours!
Autumn is my favorite time of the year so I'm looking forward to all the fall weather and activities that go along with it, even if it means winter is getting closer. BOOO!
Anyway, here is a painting I've been working on and finally finished. Chelonians are the order of reptiles including turtles, terrapins and tortoises. We own a tortoise and temporarily housed my grandmother's pet turtle, they gave me the idea to include turtles in my ocean series. I also felt that in keeping with my mission to bring awareness and help to animals in need that I paint a species that has been suffering due to our carelessness. Turtles die everyday from being caught in fishing line, nets and trash and subsequently drowning from the entanglement. Abdominal obstruction also occurs when these animals eat trash, like plastic bags, that resemble one of their favorite foods, jellyfish. They are unable to digest the plastic and if not removed surgically they will die.
In honor of these peaceful and beautiful creatures I will donate 20% of the sale of this piece to the Animal Welfare Institute to help in their mission for cleaner oceans, animal safety and welfare and to minimize the impact we humans have on this earth.
